india public service announcement
Background
In order to survive long term, a civilization needs to have power. One way to acquire and maintain power is to control larger areas of land. The Ancient Indian Dynasties have hired you to help them expand the amount of land they control by motivating people to settle in each region of the subcontinent.
Your task is to learn about all of the regions of India. For each region, take notes about the geography, resources, climate, and other pertinent information. Rate each area on a scale of 1-5 with one being you couldn't be paid enough to settle there, and five being you would pay everything you have to settle in that location. Be prepared to support your ratings with evidence during our class activity.
The Task
Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you really have no choice if you'd like to pass history) is to entice ancient Indians to leave one region of India to settle in another. As the power and status of the civilization depend on your success, the dynasties request that you create public service announcements to educate the people on the benefits of settling throughout the country. Your PSA should be between thirty seconds and one minute long. You should accentuate the positive and minimize the negative about your assigned region while giving factual information. You may wish to compare your region to others, but may not make any derogatory statements about other regions. After all, your goal is to help India unite into a massive, powerful nation. You must consider the four basic needs of settlers: food, water, shelter and protection.
The Rules
1. You must create a storyboard before beginning to create on computer.
2. You group must meet with me to discuss the storyboard, gain approval, and determine presentation options based on your plan. Different ideas will lead to different technology options. Remember that the information drives the technology choice, not the other way around.
3. No actual students or last names may appear in your project as it will be posted publicly.
4. You will be expected to provide feedback to both your teammates based on our peer rubric, and the projects based on the expectation rubric.
5. Projects are being judged based on content. Make sure you have sufficient information before you let yourself get caught up in too much computer creativity. Cool technology alone will not earn you a good grade. Appropriate and thorough information will earn you a good grade, even if the technology is not as fancy or complex.
6. Projects will be presented to the class the day following the due date. This will give you time to focus on your oral presentation after your project is completed.
Update
Dear Parents,
This project has taken longer than originally planned because students turned their one minute PSA assignment into fifteen minute infomercials, web sites, never before used technology that had to be mastered, multiple videos, and complete ad campaigns. They chose to add to the expectations in order to be more thorough, learn more in-depth information, and showcase their computer skills and creativity. We are very proud of the work they have created and hope that you will enjoy it as well. Please feel free to provide feedback and encouragement in the comment section, which will be added after students present in class.
